What is the Islamic stance of abortion?
In Islam, abortion is a crime if there is no legitimate reason. It is forbidden either the foetus is the fruit of legal or illegal marriage because in both cases the foetus has the right of life. All those who are responsible for the foetus miscarriage are guilty. Imam Malik claimed that even if the foetus is not fully developed, its abortion is a crime. The Islamic Charia stipulates that the culprit must pay a Diah (blood money) to the foetus’ heirs. This Diah is of 50 golden coin (i.e. one tenth of his mother's Diah if she is killed which is 500 golden coin). This sum equals to 233.5 gram of gold. To know the amount of this Diah, we multiply 233.5 by the price of one gram of gold in the time of abortion. |
