What is the Islamic stance of praying in a mosque built in a place in which there are graves?
The prophet-may peace be upon him- said: «Those before you were taking the graves of their prophets and those of the pious for mosques. No, do not take graves for mosques, I forbid you from doing this». What can be understood from this Hadith and so many other legal provisions (texts) is the following: - It is not permissible to take graves for mosques. - It is not allowed to pray in a mosque in which there are graves. - If there is a wall that separates the mosque from the graves, the prayer in this mosque is right and acceptable. The Imams of this mosque and the villagers must avoid disturbance, and respect and preserve their fraternity.
