Fiqh of alteration
Introduction The Almighty Allah sent down prophets and messengers in order to transmit His message, and to alter the corrupted mores and deprived principles of their peoples. So, they conveyed their messages and they changed the immoral conditions that were widespread among their people. The Almighty Allah sent each prophet to his nation (people) except the prophet Muhammad -may peace be upon him- who is sent to all humanity. The relation between human being, the universe and the society is regulated by natural laws and norms that can not be changed or substituted. Allah the Almighty said: «How many generations had passed away before you, so travel the earth and see how the unbelievers ended. This is a proclamation to the people, and a guidance and admonition to the pious». [Surat Al-Imran/The Family of Imran, 137- 138] «… And you will never find alteration in the ordinance of Allah, and you will never find changing in the ordinance of Allah». [Surat Fâtir/The Originator, from the verse 43] Human being is an effective and active element who can make a change in his conduct by himself and with his will. The Almighty Allah said: «… Surely Allah does not change the condition of a people unless they change what is in themselves…». [Surat Ar-Rad /The Thunder, from the verse 11]
I. The definition of alteration. Alteration means to move from one situation to another which is better than it.
II. The indications of alteration. 1. Alienation from Allah. 2. The decrease in worships and their neglect. 3. Despair and weariness and the loss of the sense of life. 4. The spread of corruption and the existence of a disorder at the level of the self and the society: mentalities, systems, values, behaviors...). Thus, it is an obligation on every one of us to sense responsibility towards all these critical situations, otherwise Allah's punishment will descend on people. The Almighty Allah said: «And fear affliction which may not smite only those of you in particular who are evildoers, and know that Allah is severe in retribution». [Surat Al-Anfâl/ The Spoils of War, 25] 5. The decrease or the absence of production and works. 6. Disturbance in the order of priorities.
III. The domains of alteration. 1- The changing of thoughts, values, mentalities and convictions. 2- The changing of manners. 3- The changing of situations. 4- The changing of models.
IV. The rules of alteration. 1. Respecting the norms: One has to shun first the flagrant sins then the small ones, and has to adopt degradation in the use of means. Abi Saîd El-Khodri -may Allah be pleased with him-said: I heard the prophet -may peace be upon him- saying: «He who sees atrocious acts must alter them by his hands (i.e. authority) and if he is not able, so by his tongue (i.e. saying or advice), and if he is unable by his tongue, so by his heart (denying them) and this is the lowest degree of faith (i.e. the least that one can do) ». [Reported by Muslim] 2. Having an earnest will. 3. Forbearance: One must be patient and must bear the difficulties of alteration. 4. The existence of supporting means: The Almighty Allah said: «… Allah is the one who has strengthened you with victory and with the believers». [Surat Al-Anfâl/ The Spoils of War, 25] 5. A good planning.
V. Conclusions. 1- Feeling pain and danger is the first step towards alteration. 2- Drawing up the objectives of alteration. 3- Adopting degradation in alteration. The prophet -may peace be upon him- said: «He who sees atrocious acts must alter them by his hands (i.e. authority) and if he is not able, so by his tongue (i.e. saying or advice), and if he is unable by his tongue, so by his heart (denying them) and this is the lowest degree of faith (i.e. the least that one can do) ». [Reported by Muslim]
