The unity of the Muslim nation

Introduction: the reasons behind choosing this subject

- The knowledge of the prophet's guidance in the momentous matters of the nation.

- The promulgation of Islam is a mission that must be assumed or born by the unified group.

- The Muslim nation witnessed many painful incidents and was subject to all kinds of its enemies' assaults and oppressions.

I. Inculcating the meaning of nation

Many legal texts inculcate the concept of nation in the minds of the Muslims. The Almighty Allah said:

«And so We appointed you as a just and distinguished nation…». [Surat Al-Baqara/ the Heifer, 143]

«Indeed, these We relate to you are your nation of Islam, one nation for all time, and I am your Lord, so worship Me». [Surat Al-Anbiyâ'/ the Prophets, 92]

«And surely this nation of yours is one nation, and I am your Lord, so fear Me». [Surat Al-Moominun/ the Believers, 52]

The Muslim nation has a mission to accomplish and a message to convey. This message is an extension of that of the prophet -may peace be upon him- about whom the Almighty Allah said: «And We did not send you but as a mercy to all beings». [Al-Anbiyâ', 107]

II. The requirements of the nation's unity

1- The unity of religion which is a fixed and absolute reference. The Almighty Allah said: «Indeed, the only religion with Allah is Islam (submission to the will of Allah) ». [Surat Al-Imrân/ the Family of Imran, 19]

«And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam never shall it be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he shall be one of the losers». [Al-Imrân, 85]

«O you who believe! Submit sincerely in devotion to Allah, and do not die except as Muslims». [Al-Imrân, 102]

«And adhere to the bond of Allah all together, and do not be divided and remember the Grace of Allah upon you when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together, and by His Grace you became brethren, and you were on the verge of the pitfall of the Fire, and He saved you from it. So Allah expounds His Signs to you that you may be guided». [Al-Imrân, 103]

Islam is a way of life, and a means to achieve self esteem, might and, civilization (success).

Omar bnu El-Khatab said: «We were abject and Allah honored us with Islam, and if we seek might in other than Islam Allah humiliates us».

2- The unity of history: the shinning Islamic history is brimful of glorious achievements and merits that earned the Muslim nation pride and honor. This history is the solid base for the civilizational and intellectual progresses of the nation. Thus, an intelligent study of this history is required in order to take warnings and deduce lessons and therefore work for achieving the nation's glory and might; and to withstand and defy the challenges that face it at present and in the future.

3- The unity of fate: the Muslim nation is threatened by a common danger; it is the enemy's intended target. Therefore, neglecting a part of it enables the enemy to annihilate and eliminates its glories. The Muslim nation is in urgent need of the collaboration of its efforts in all domains: political, cultural, economic, military and communicative in order to protect its common destiny.

4- The unity of aim: the main aims of the Muslims is gaining Allah's pleasure and satisfaction and entering paradise; achieving world mastership, and promulgating Islam and witnessing over people in the Hereafter. The Almighty Allah said: «And so We have appointed you as a just and distinguished nation to be witness over all people, and the Messenger be a witness over you…». [Al-Baqara, 143]

The Muslims must adopt some causative factors and perform the individual as well as the collective duties that lead to the realization of these aims. The Almighty Allah said: «You were the best nation to have been raised up for humankind. You enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong, and you believe in Allah…». [Al-Imrân, 110]

5- The unity of challenges and obstacles: the Muslim nation faces common challenges and hindrances, among them:

a) Challenging the Zionists: the Zionists strive to realize their devilish project of expansion. Their motto is "Your frontiers (o Israel) are from Euphrates to Nile".

b) Challenging Christianization: the victories achieved by the Muslim pioneers burst forth the crusaders to revenge themselves on the whole Muslim nation. Thus, they made the latter the target of their Christianization campaigns.

c) Challenging backwardness: the entire Muslim nation suffers from backwardness at all levels: political, cultural, economic, scientific, technological…the thing that reinforces this challenge is the existence of factors that encourage brain drain in the Muslim nation, and the existence of better pay and conditions in the foreign countries that attract the skilled Muslim persons.

d) Challenging globalization: globalization aims at imposing special modes and systems on the nation in all domains in order to grasp all the nation's resources.

III. Calling to unity and forbidding separation

Many verses and Ahadith enjoin unity and reject divergence and division.

The Almighty Allah said: «And adhere to the bond of Allah all together, and do not be divided and remember the Grace of Allah upon you when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together, and by His Grace you became brethren, and you were on the verge of the pitfall of the Fire, and He saved you from it. So Allah expounds His Signs to you that you may be guided». [Al-Imrân, 103]

«And obey Allah and His Messenger and do not engage in disputes with one another, lest you lose courage and become insignificant, and be patient, surely Allah is with the patient». [Surat Al-Anfâl/ the Spoils of War, 46]

«And the believing men and the believing women, they are the friends of each other, they enjoin good and forbid evil, and establish prayers, and pay the alms, and obey Allah and His Messenger, these, upon them Allah will have mercy, indeed, Allah is Almighty, All- Wise». [Surat At-Tawba/ the Repentance, 71]

The prophet -may peace be upon him- said:

«The believers (in their relations) are like a structure; each of its part is firmly linked to the other». [Reported by El-Bukhâri and Muslim]

«The believers, in their love, mercy and kindness to one another are like a body: if any part of it is ill the whole body shares its sleeplessness and fever». [Reported by Muslim and El-Bukhâri]

IV. Conclusions

In spite of the different reverses and challenges that the Muslim nation face, the Almighty Allah promised it strength and victory; it never perishes. And in order to realize this, the Muslim nation must adopt the following stipulations:

1- Sticking to Revelation and holding the firm support of religion, and submitting totally to Islam's injunctions and rituals.

2- Knowing the seriousness of the challenges and classifying enemies; getting rid of the different animosities between the members of the nation.

3- Gathering all the efforts and powers of the nation: Ulemas, intellects, youth, men, women…

4- Better exploiting the natural and human resources of the nation

5- Knowing the shortcomings and being firmly determined to treat them by relying on the True Islamic Religion. At that time, the Almighty Allah grants the Muslim nation triumph after frustration and victory after defeat.
