The rescued sect
Introduction. Some people believe that the rescued sect is known, and it is the one for which Allah promised paradise. They thought that the one who dissents from it will enter Hell and more than this, they declare enmity towards him. And if he dies, he will be of the inhabitants of Hell. They evidenced their view by the following Ahadith: «He who overstepped the sect even a span of the hand is no longer a Muslim». [Reported by Ibn Madja]. «He who forsook the sect and died will receive the chastisement of Fire». [Reported by Abu Dawud].
I. The definition of the rescued sect. The rescued sect is the victorious and the righteous one (the one which follows the right path) for which Allah promised paradise. It has got many names, among them: the group, the people of Hadith, the predecessors … Among the Ahadith that affirm this, we mention: «A sect of my nation continues to follow Allah's instructions, it is never hurt by those who deceive or contradict it until the victory granted by Allah comes and they will be above all people». [Reported by Ahmad, El-Boukhari and Muslim]. «A sect of my nation is still supporting the religion, surmounting their enemies, and never be harmed by those who contradict them». [Reported by Ahmed]. «Indeed! Those before you who were among the people of the Book were divided into 72 sects, and in fact this sect (in another narration it was said "and in fact my nation") will be divided into 73 sects. 72 of them will be in Fire and one will enter paradise (in another narration "all of them are in Fire except one which is the group". In another narration- those who live as I and my companions live». [A sound and famous Hadith, it is reported differently by the people of Sunnan].
· Commentary on this Hadith. This Hadith is not narrated by El-Boukhari and Muslim. It is not possible for these two Imams to neglect such a famous and great Hadith. - Ibnu El-Wazîr refuted the saying "all of them are in fire except one" because it leads to charging the nation of disbelief (each one charges the other). - What confirms the trueness of the prophet's prophecy is his prediction of the division of the Muslim nation into aberrant sects. Among the sects that are astray, we mention: El-Qadaria, Er-Rafida, El-Djahmia, El-Khawaridj, El-Murjiâ… Abdul Qâhir bnu Tâhir Et-Tamimi said: "The Ulemas knew better that the prophet- may peace be upon him- did not mean by the banned sects the ones which differ in the branches of Fiqh concerning the lawful and the forbidden things. What he meant is those who differ with the truthful persons as regards monotheism". - «All of them are in Fire»: This does not imply the disbelief of this sect and its forsaking the religion, and if this addition is true, it means not its perpetuity in Fire as it is the case for the unbelievers. Imam Eshâtibi gave five meanings to the "sect". They are: - The great mass of the Muslims. - The Sahaba (the prophet's companions). - The diligent Ulemas. - The people of Hadith. - The pious predecessors.
II. The characteristics of the rescued sect. 1- The right and the true belief which is far from being heretical. 2- Comprehensiveness in understanding Islam. 3- Their worship must be based on faithfulness and rightness. The Almighty Allah said: «Say: "surely my prayer and my devotion, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. No partner has he, and this is what I have been commanded, and I the first of those who are Muslim». [Surat Al-An'âm/The Cattle, 162 and 163]. 4- Moderation and temperance: Allah the Great said: «And so we have appointed you as just and distinguished nation to be witnesses over people and the Messenger is a witness over you». [Surat Al-Baqara/The Heifer, from the verse 143]. 5- Justice and fairness with the supporters and the opponents. The Almighty Allah said: «…And do not let detestation of a people move you to be unfair, be equitable, that is closer to piety…». [Surat Al-Mâ'ida/The Table Spread, from the verse 8]. 6- The belief that no one is infallible except the prophet Muhammad- may peace be upon him. Imam Mâlik said: "The saying of every human being can be considered or ignored except that of the one who is buried in this tomb". He said so pointing at the tomb of the prophet Muhammad -may peace be upon him.
III. Conclusions. 1. The rescued sect is not a fixed sect but rather a list of features, if they are present in a given person he will be of the rescued sect. 2. It is not allowed to defame or hurt the opponents and charge them with disbelief. In fact, the divergence in opinion should not pass from mind (reason) to heart (feelings). 3. Each Muslim strives in worships but their degrees in paradise will be different. The Almighty Allah said: «…Then whoever is thrust away from Fire and is admitted to paradise has succeeded…». [Surat Al-Imrân/The Family of Imran, from the verse 185]. «…For this let the strivers strive». [Surat Al-Mutaffifin/The Defrauders, from the verse 26].
